    It was mechanically damaged while still in spike form, that’s why you have the shape repeating like that. As other said, most likely a cat or you snagged the edge on a sharp end of clothes/jewelry.

    I actually don’t think this is a cat crunch! I think it got snagged on something while it was unfurling

    Those marks happen during its unfurling process. Might of brushed against something abrasive enough to cause a tear and the odd crescent marks are like if you folded paper and cut them like snowflakes.
